Did you notice that Facebook was down yesterday? Well if you didn’t good on you, means you have somewhat of a life outside of Facebook.
But for those of us who can’t get enough of Facebook, be that because its one of the pillars of your business, or you simply love the entertainment factor (not me – honestly), then you were probably refreshing over and over again, checking your wifi, trying different passwords and wondering why you couldn’t get onto that famous white and blue interface.
Many people scurried over to Twitter to check whether Facebook was indeed down as the blackout impacted Instagram too (another social platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg!).
There are numerous lessons for us who depend on Social Media and giants like Facebook, and the biggest one is this: if all your intellectual property is on Facebook, you may as well put your life in the hands of a stranger.
Yep!
Facebook doesn’t owe you anything, after all, it is a free platform for all to use (save that you might have invested some advertising revenue). What does this mean?
Two things:
1. Facebook is good, but if you don’t have a website and a presence on other platforms, you are taking a high risk, especially if you store all your intellect property on there or worst still use as some sort of storage facility.
2. Email marketing is still very much alive! If you had an important message to get across and there’s a Facebook blackout, your list will save the day.
There are much more lessons to be learnt, like not keeping all your eggs in one basket, and having appropriate backup systems in place.
I share more on this topic on my Facebook page, but don’t be dismayed, I have a backup.
Till next time – over and out!
